Like everyone, the Texas Impact staff are horrified by the events around the world, but also by the news of the week at home.
On Monday, the Attorney General issued a non-binding opinion that certain types of gender-affirming care constitute “child abuse” under Texas law. On Tuesday, the Governor followed up on the Attorney General’s opinion, sending a letter to state agencies ordering the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to investigate any reported incidence of gender-affirming care.
Faith leaders immediately responded with outrage.
Episcopal Bishop Andrew Doyle said, “Regardless of enforceability, Abbott and Paxton’s actions against trans youth politicizes people’s lives for gain. Turning caregivers and teachers into reporters is a fear tactic reminiscent of historic demonization and witch hunts.”
Lutheran Bishop Erik Gronberg said, “it is clear what clergy and lay members of our communities do not have to do. But what do we need to do? The first is recognize that these statements come conspicuously close to the state primary elections that are concluding March 1st. As informed citizens, we should be aware of the potential motivations of leaders in their words and do our research on what those words do and do not require of us.”
Lutheran Bishop Michael Rinehart said, “We hold in prayer all who have been impacted by these most recent statements and acts of transphobia, and know that we are called to speak the truth of God’s love for all in our own words and actions.”
Leaders of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism-TX said, “Rather than attacking transgender youth, Governor Abbott and Attorney General Paxton should focus on creating a society that is safe and inclusive for all people.”

During this early voting period, we see evidence of public policy failing us at multiple levels. Hopefully this serves as a reminder to us all that our participation in democracy is vital. Our community needs your faithful witness.
