Texas Impact’s board of directors met in July to set their legislative priorities for the 2023 legislative session. There were deep conversations and discernment—our board worked really hard. The priorities they came up with reflect the consensus positions of our member traditions, and they represent “live” policy issues we know will be front and center in the Capitol next spring.

Among our priority issues are some new topics for Texas Impact. By custom, Texas Impact’s board does not take positions on issues where there is significant disagreement among the national denominations that make up Texas Impact’s membership. Until 2022, reproductive issues fell in this category, but that changed following the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. After months of intense discussion, study, and prayer, the board voted to affirm a significant focus on reproductive justice. They also included gun regulation for the first time. These new issues join longstanding Texas Impact legislative priorities like expanding Medicaid; promoting climate solutions; protecting vulnerable populations; and supporting public schools.

The board started their meeting with a Talanoa Dialogue. Board members identified themes of alienation, turmoil, and fear of change in our socio-political environment. They named goals of healthy community relationships and communication. They pointed to strategies that include personal actions like “self-care” and “better listening,” as well as highlighting the foundational importance of functioning democratic systems.

Texas Impact’s board of directors represents our two-dozen member faith traditions, as well as regional interfaith bodies and seminaries. Individually, they are some of the wisest, most committed faith leaders in our state. Collectively, they bring a breathtaking breadth of experience and perspective. Some are clergy, some are lay leaders. Some are ranchers, some are nurses; some are scientists, some are artists. They share a deep love for our state, and growing concerns about where we are headed.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be rolling out resources on our legislative priorities and launching opportunities for Texans of faith to engage in advocacy on specific issues they care about. Meanwhile, we hope you’ll take a look at the list, and consider where your faith calls you to raise your voice.
