Make a difference at the Capitol!

Are you wanting to take a more active role at the Capitol this session, but holding signs and making phone calls, or visiting every legislative office isn’t in your wheelhouse? If you’re nodding your head already, then we’re looking for you.

The Texas State Capitol is a bustling hub of activity, full of visitors, advocates, and legislators navigating the complexities of our democracy. But what if this dynamic space could also feel more welcoming—more Texas Friendly? That’s exactly what a new volunteer group, the Capitol Support Squad, is setting out to do.

This initiative is focused on accessibility and hospitality, creating a culture where everyone who visits the Capitol feels supported and valued. The group will function as a friendly presence, offering directions to important campus locations, such as elevators, bathrooms, and accessible entrances. Providing instruction on how and where to drop a card or register to testify, education on etiquette while visiting with legislators and while sitting in House and Senate Gallery, but most importantly offering a warm welcome to all. If you’ve ever wanted to help make the Capitol a more inclusive and approachable space, this could be your opportunity.

How Can You Get Involved?

A training session is scheduled for January 19, 2024, at First United Methodist Church in Austin. Attending this session is the first step to becoming an official volunteer. This training will provide the tools and knowledge you need to be effective in this unique role, including hospitality best practices, de-escalation techniques, and ways to navigate the Capitol environment.

Volunteer Commitment

To ensure the effectiveness of the program, we’re looking for a team of 10-20 committed volunteers who can attend the training in person. While we appreciate interest from out-of-town residents, this role is best suited for those living in or near Austin who can regularly engage on-site at the Capitol building. For those from cities like Dallas, Houston, or further away, we’re exploring ways to involve remote participants in supporting roles. Please reach out for more information on how you might contribute.

RSVP Information

To secure your spot in the training, RSVP today! Attendance at the training session is required to officially join the volunteer group.

Why Join?

Volunteering with this group is more than just lending a hand—it’s about shaping the culture of one of Texas’s most iconic institutions. You’ll play a vital role in ensuring that the Capitol is a place where all voices feel heard and respected. And in true Texas spirit, you’ll help make the Capitol a more welcoming space for everyone who walks through its doors.
