What’s Sunset Review?
As taxpayers and as community members, we all should be invested in making sure government programs and agencies are functioning optimally. To accomplish this goal, we need mechanisms to ensure the government is adapting to an ever-changing population and context. In Texas, that mechanism is called the Sunset review. Sunset review is a regularly scheduled, top-to-bottom assessment of a state agency. It’s an opportunity for the Legislature to look closely at each agency and make periodic changes to an agency’s mission or operations as needed. The agencies scheduled to go through the Sunset review process are responsible for implementing policies ranging from intensive support for Texans with certain disabilities to administration of programs that impact literally every person in Texas. That means it’s especially important for all Texans to weigh in on their review.
