Abel Vega, Rio Texas Conference, United Methodist Church; Excy Guardado; Natalia Chavez; Kabibi Bamuamba; and Pastor Dianne Garcia, Roca de Refugio discuss immigration challenges at IWC's conference September 29.

Dear {name},

On Saturday, Texas Impact was honored to participate in the Interfaith Welcome Coalition’s 10th anniversary conference at La Trinidad United Methodist Church in San Antonio. More than 100 people participated in the immigration education and advocacy event, which featured panel discussions, opportunities for action, and a moving speech by Bishop Joel Martinez on the ongoing work of justice advocacy.

Bishop Martinez reminded participants of the work of advocates in other times and places. “Go to the places, and pay respect for those who went before you—and thank God,” Martinez urged, recounting the work of United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta. Huerta famously called to bystanders at a UFW march, “Don’t be a marshmallow. Walk the street with us into history. Get off the sidewalk.”

Last weekend also featured two events on gun violence prevention, one at Covenant Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, and the other at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin co-hosted by Oak Hill United Methodist Church. Between the two events, nearly 100 people took part in gun violence prevention conversations.

Of course numbers aren’t the only measure of impact, but it’s definitely good to know that more and more Texans are finding out about Texas Impact and getting involved. If you’ve been waiting to deepen your own engagement, it’s a perfect time to take that step: the next Texas legislative session starts in about 100 days. Texas Impact already is scheduling legislative meetings, discussing anticipated legislation, and training advocates. You can sign up for opportunities to plug in on the Action Center page of our website.

Speaking of signing up, on October 5 and 6 you’ll have two more chances to participate in When We Wake Up on Wednesday, a Zoom program by Texas Impact and the City of San Antonio Faith-based Initiative to help congregations prepare to meet community needs the day after the election.

Texas Impact members are no marshmallows! All over the state you are working hard for justice, freedom, and peace. We are so grateful you choose to do your work with us. Thank you!

Love,

Bee Moorhead

Texas Impact Executive Director
