In 2025, Congress made changes to SNAP in HR1 (the "One Big Bill"). They put new financial burdens on states and made it harder for our neighbors to get the food they need.
Now it's state budget time, and many Texans are worried the state won't prioritize funding for SNAP. It's time for Texans of faith and conscience to step up: Join with thousands of Texans and tell the Texas Legislature that funding for SNAP is not negotiable.
In Texas, HR1 is putting pressure on the state budget process that is just ramping up, as lawmakers face a new $2 billion SNAP cost resulting from HR1 provisions as well as challenges to state health care funding. Texas faith communities, in partnership with food banks and other stakeholders, insist the state must fully fund SNAP without taking funds away from other social programs. Advocates are urging all state lawmakers to commit to fund SNAP for the 2028-2029 biennium, to give Congress time to repeal HR1 and recalibrate the federal SNAP program.
