Finally, while Texas Impact is focused on the action in our state capitol, we know things are busy in the nation’s capitol as well, including an increasingly concerning push to cut Medicaid, which provides health care for low-income children, seniors, and those with disabilities, to allow for tax cuts for wealthier Americans. Encouragingly, two Texas Republican members of Congress, Reps. Tony Gonzales and Monica De La Cruz, have raised concerns about Medicaid cuts.
Cutting Medicaid could jeopardize a variety of health care services, including doctor and specialist visits, mental health services; long-term care and nursing home care, and hospital care — especially in rural areas.
While Texans who currently have Medicaid insurance would face the brunt of the cuts, the fact is that slashing Medicaid would hurt all of us. Medicaid is the backbone of the health care system in Texas, providing critical funding to hospitals, clinics, and other health care providers. Federal cuts to Medicaid would also slash states’ funding, leaving states with fewer resources for priorities like education and public safety and putting more pressure on state and local taxes.
The next few weeks are critical for this issue, and your voice matters. One of the best ways to raise your voice is by meeting with your congressional representative, and the great news is, you can do that via Zoom. Most members of Congress and their staffs are used to meeting with constituents via Zoom, and Texas Impact can help you schedule a meeting for you and other members of your community. With 75 days left to go in this legislative session, there is still plenty of time for all kinds of things to happen. Texas Impact is here to help you stay informed and stay engaged. Thanks for your faithful witness!
