This week, the US Senate Finance Committee passed its version of the federal budget package, known as the “big beautiful bill.” Many advocates expected the Senate version to moderate the most extreme provisions of the House-passed version of the package, but particularly in the area of healthcare, the Senate version is even worse. The full Senate is expected to vote before the end of the month, and the goal is to have a bill on the president’s desk by July 4th.
The bill would have especially bad consequences for the millions of Americans who rely on Medicaid, Medicare, or the Affordable Care Act—and by extension, anyone else who depends on the nation’s healthcare system. Cohn points out that the bill would be devastating for rural hospitals, which are already struggling nationally and in Texas.
