Dear {name},
This week, Speaker Burrows issued House committee assignments. Now that committees are assigned, they can start holding hearings. This signals the beginning of the second movement of the “legislative symphony” and the pace is about to accelerate.
As the action in the Pink Building heats up, it’s more important than ever for advocates to show up. We are one month out from Faith Days at the Capitol, so it’s time to get yourself and your crew registered. From the welcome dinner on Sunday, March 16, to the rally and legislative training on March 17, to the legislative breakfast and office visits on March 18, Faith Days are an important opportunity to advocate at the Capitol on issues you care about—and connect with other Texans who share your values and concerns. For those so inclined, there’s even group singing in the rotunda!
Faith Days are a collaborative effort between Texas Impact, our member institutions, and congregations of all faiths. Our theme this year, “Family Matters,” highlights our shared values of justice, opportunity, and equity for all people: we are all family, and all our families matter.
It’s hard for some Texans to focus on the legislature because there is so much activity at the federal level. We get that. Texas Impact focuses mostly on state-level policy, but sometimes the boundaries are blurry—and nowhere is that the case more than in Medicaid. Congressional decisions about Medicaid have huge implications for Texas. Medicaid is a major provider of health insurance for Texans, including covering about half of all births in our state. In addition, changes to federal Medicaid formulas could rock our state budget, impacting other areas of state government.
Please take a minute to call your US representative and senators and urge them not to cut Medicaid. You can call them through the US Capitol Switchboard, and you don’t even have to know who represents you (although we hope you do.) Call 202-224-3121, give the operator your zip code, and they will connect you with your elected officials' office.
Don’t forget to sign up for our Rapid Response team to stay on top of the most current information we have about the legislative session. Visit our website for resources to support your advocacy, and check out our new Substack for posts from Texas Impact staff members and partners.
Thank you for your continued support, your faithful leadership, and your camaraderie. You give us hope and make us smile!
