This week, U.S. Senate leaders released legislation that would fund ICE and the Border Patrol through 2029. The legislation, which is called “reconciliation,” would allow congressional Republicans to lock in funding for immigration enforcement without the need to secure the approval of any congressional Democrats. If “reconciliation” sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the same strategy that enabled passage of last year’s H.R.1, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” that cut healthcare, food assistance, and climate protection to fund a violent anti-immigrant regime and tax cuts for affluent Americans.
Texas Impact represents faith traditions that oppose the policies H.R.1 enables, and that the latest reconciliation package would enable. We work to advance legislation that prioritizes the poor, the vulnerable, and the marginalized. HR.1 takes food from the hungry, healthcare from the sick, protection from the climate, and dignity from migrants—while expanding tax breaks for the wealthy and subsidies for fossil fuels. It reflects a moral vision that contradicts core teachings across our faith traditions.
That’s why Texas Impact is a founding partner in Covenant for Our Future—a national, multi‑faith coalition bringing together diverse organizations, leaders, and communities calling for the repeal of HR.1 and the renewal of the federal government’s commitment to the common good.
Covenant for Our Future asserts five moral mandates violated in H.R.1:
- Economic Dignity & Healthcare for All
- Racial Justice and Peace-Building
- Migrant Rights
- Climate Justice & a Clean Energy Economy
- Global Solidarity for the Common Good
