Texas Poverty Rate on the Rise

The US Census Bureau reported today that the poverty rate in Texas rose sharply from 2008 to 2009.

In 2009, over 4.2 million Texans, including over 1.7 million children, lived under the Federal Poverty Line. These numbers mean that 17.3 percent of Texans and 25.6 percent of Texas children lived in poverty in the past year.

To be under the Federal Poverty Line in 2009, a family of four had to receive an income of $22,050 or less.

A brief article in the Dallas Morning News gives background to the new figures.
