Almost a hundred people gathered at Holman Street Baptist Church in Houston on Thursday evening to voice their concern about the health insurance crisis in Texas. Giving a human face to the millions of under- and uninsured in Texas, community members shared their testimonies of navigating the health insurance system and discussed ways that it might be improved.
A panel made up of Representative Garnet Coleman, Representative Alma Allen, Daniel Goldberg of Baylor University College of Medicine, and ACORN member Margaret Torres answered questions that the audience posed.
Margaret Torres told community members her harrowing story of trying to get health insurance after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Like many Americans, Ms. Torres had been insured through her employer; yet, after her diagnosis she could no longer work. For twelve years, Ms. Torres suffered from high blood pressure and heart problems caused by her tumor—all without health insurance. Ms. Torres credits the kindness of her doctor for helping her survive.
Representative Coleman stressed the importance of ensuring that all Texans have health insurance. He said that the only way to make certain that no one is left behind is to become active in the political process. He encouraged all present to vote for those who will demand a more equitable health insurance system.
Representative Coleman also reminded the audience to visit their senators and representatives to express their concerns. He said that Texans need to demand that others do not suffer like Ms. Torres did. The event was hosted by Texas Impact, Texas Public Interest Research Group (TexPIRG), the Association of Communities for Reform Now (ACORN), and Texas Legal Services. If you missed this one, don't worry! Texas Impact will be hosting several other Town Hall meetings throughout Texas during the summer. Check back soon for more information.
