Health and Strength and Daily Food

Health and Strength and Daily Food is a new initiative developed by Texas Impact to address the childhood obesity crisis. By creating partnerships with state, federal, and local agencies we seek to promote better access to healthy foods, open natural spaces, and active recreational opportunities for Texas children.
Texas Impact is working with the Christian Life Commission and other organizations throughout Texas to develop Health and Strength and Daily Food. The initiative will bring together volunteers from churches, mosques, synagogues, and other faith communities to fight the obesity epidemic in Texas. A significant aspect of this initiative can be addressed by exploring ways to make healthier foods and nutritional information available to all children, especially in communities where access to healthy food is lacking. These “food deserts” as they are known, often occur in communities where safe open areas and access to nature is also limited. This combination of poor food choices, and inadequate outside play areas and open space, is particularly toxic to our childrens' well-being.

As a first step, Health and Strength and Daily Food encourages faith communities to participate in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and help provide access to nutritious food for those who need it most. Health and Strength and Daily Food seeks to link congregations and faith organizations and their established summer activities, with this existing program in an effort to promote healthy communities through physical activity, safe play spaces, and nutritious meals. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), and exists as a resource for bringing healthy food to those who are in need.
