For the first time in many years, Congress is close to passing an energy bill with significant provisions to curb greenhouse gases. But key elements of the bill are in dispute and could be lost in negotiations. Lawmakers need to hear early and often that Texans support strong renewable energy and fuel efficiency standards.
In June, the Senate passed a bill significantly increasing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for automobiles -- 35 mpg by 2020. In August, the House passed an Energy Bill requiring electric utilities to obtain more power from clean, renewable sources such as the wind and sun.
Now, the two versions of the bill must be reconciled and passed in both houses of Congress. There are only a few weeks left in the current congressional session to complete work on this important legislation.
In addition to reducing global warming emissions, both the renewable energy and vehicle emissions provisions of H.R. 6: The Renewable Fuels, Consumer Protection, and Energy Efficiency Act of 2007 would reduce harmful air pollution in Texas that makes people sick and costs our state money.
