Texas Senate Approves Anti-Sanctuary Cities Bill
This week, the Texas Senate debated Senate Bill 4, which would ban so-called "sanctuary cities" in Texas and withhold state funding from jurisdictions that don't comply with federal immigration detainer requests.
Senators discussed exemptions for hospitals, schools, and places of worship. They also discussed mechanisms to withhold local funding and elected officials' right to free speech. After considering 39 amendments, the Senate approved the measure along party lines, 20-11.
