Baseless Hatred: Tisha b'Av at the Texas Capitol
On August 1, as a prelude to Texas Impact’s Interfaith Lobby Day, we will gather with Rabbi Neil Blumofe and Rabbi Susan Lippe in the House Chamber to observe the Jewish holy day of Tisha b’Av, which begins at sundown on Monday, July 31.
Tisha b’Av is a day of mourning and fasting, when Jews are called to reflect on the suffering that still occurs in our world as a result of sinat hinam, or baseless hatred. It is a day when we identify instances of baseless hatred, reflect on the disrespect and humiliation inflicted on our fellow humans, and in community with each other, pledge to repair and rebuild.
Our lobby day and Tisha b’Av fall together by coincidence, but it’s relevant that we are organizing a faithful opposition on this day. Together we will stand against harmful legislation that targets vulnerable people, affirms state-sponsored discrimination, and dismisses the wisdom of local communities. We cannot engage in baseless hatred by targeting the marginalized for imagined threats to public safety.
People of all faith traditions (and those who are just interested!) are welcome at this worship service. As members of communities we celebrate when good things happen, support each other through challenging times, and mourn together. Our religious traditions are all different, but on this day our mainstream faith communities will come together to affirm the shared values of respect, dignity, and welcome for every person.
The Tisha B’av service will take place on Tuesday, August 1 in the House Chamber. Services will begin at 8:30 AM and end at 9:15 AM.
The service is open to the public, and people of all faiths are welcome.
A few things to know:
No food or drinks are allowed in the House Chamber. The House Chamber is located on the second floor of the Capitol. You should allow ample time for parking either on a nearby street or at the Capitol Visitors Parking Garage. You may enter at any of the four Capitol entrances and will go through security. The Texas Impact Interfaith Lobby Day will begin at 10:00 AM on the south steps of the Capitol with a press conference and rally, and all who attend the service are welcome to join us there.
