Ambition Mechanism

It is clear going into the Paris climate talks that the emissions reductions pledged by countries in the INDCs thus far will not keep global warming to the goal of less than 2-degrees Celsius. That’s why it’s so important that an “ambition” or “ratchet” mechanism be built into whatever agreement comes out of Paris. Such a mechanism would establish a schedule for revisiting the emissions reductions pledges of individual countries with an expectation that countries will “ratchet up” their emissions reductions targets at regular intervals over time.
