The August Recess
Posted August 9th, 2007 by Brooke
Congress is home for summer vacation—Go bug ‘em!
In 1970, Congress mandated themselves a vacation now known as the August Recess. Members typically head back to their districts after a hot summer in DC passing and fielding legislation. The break provides a unique opportunity to check in with members and let them know what you think about recent important votes, like those on the reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and federal increases in renewable energy commitment.
Members will keep a busy schedule during this time as they try to fit in visits with constituents, public appearances, and family time before heading back to D.C. But it's still worth the effort. Even if you cannot get a face-to-face meeting with your member, the district offices will be a locus of activity so it’s a great time to meet with staff.
Likely, your member will be out and about in your community. Try to find a way to meet her at a summertime event, even if it is just to introduce yourself. Then, next time you write her with a policy priority, you can remind her where you met and she will be able to put a face to your concern.
