01/23/2017 Action Alert: Strengthen Supports for Low-Income Texans

Submitted by Sean Hennigan on Mon, 01/23/2017 - 8:00am
A number of bills have already been filed that would improve access to food and credit by creating innovative local financing systems. This is a great strategy for Texas, and lawmakers should support this approach.

Unfortunately, some bills are already filed that would impose new restrictions on the use of SNAP benefits (Food Stamps) including requiring recipients to show a photo ID at the point of purchase. This would be a step backward for Texas and is not in line with the goal of increasing access to healthy food or helping families.

Take Action: Tell your senator and representative you support innovative financing for local solutions to increase access to food and credit, and you oppose increasing barriers to use of SNAP benefits. Call numbers available here.

Sample Script

Hello, my name is                   and I live in ___________. I am calling to thank Representative/Senator __  for his/her service this Legislative Session and to let you know that I and members of my congregation are praying for the Representative/Senator and his/her staff.

As a person of faith (or clergy) I am concerned about (whatever issue or bill you are calling about). (Add details from the information in our Action Alert.)

Can you let me know how the Representative/Senator feels about this issue/plans to vote on this bill?

Don’t forget to thank the staff member you are talking to at the end of the call, even if you disagree with their boss on the issue or bill—they are working hard and appreciate being appreciated!

In the past members have occasionally blocked the toll free number because of high call volume from people of faith. We want them to hear your voice, so if you call twice and received busy signals, email engagement@texasimpact.org and we will update the number.
